Bumthang Sightseeing

Jambay Lhakhang

Dating back to the 7th century, Jambay Lhakhang is one of the oldest temples in Bhutan. It is one of the 108 temples built by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo to subdue evil spirits in the Himalayan region. This sacred site is an important spiritual destination and hosts the vibrant Jambay Lhakhang Drup festival each year.

Kurje Lhakhang

Kurje Lhakhang is revered for housing the body imprint of Guru Rinpoche in a cave within the temple complex. Built in 1652, this sacred monastery is surrounded by tranquil forests and is considered one of the holiest pilgrimage spots in Bhutan.

Jakar Dzong

Known as the “Castle of the White Bird,” Jakar Dzong sits atop a ridge overlooking the Chamkhar Valley. Once a vital defense fortress for eastern Bhutan, it now functions as an administrative center and monastic residence. Its massive structure and serene setting make it a standout attraction.

Bumthang Brewery & Cheese Factory

Located in the Bathpalathang area, Bumthang Brewery is famous for producing Red Panda Beer, a Swiss-style Weiss beer made using traditional techniques and local ingredients. Nearby, the cheese factory crafts delicious Swiss-style cheese, which plays a key role in Bhutanese cuisine. Visitors can tour the facility and sample these unique local flavors.

Mebartsho (Burning Lake)

One of the most sacred pilgrimage sites in Bhutan, Mebartsho is a serene river gorge known as the Burning Lake. It is believed that the great saint Terton Pema Lingpa discovered Guru Rinpoche’s hidden treasures here while holding a burning lamp that miraculously remained lit underwater. The site holds great spiritual significance and attracts countless devotees.
