Though Bhutan maintains its peaceful isolation, it is well-connected to India through multiple modes of transport. The border town of Phuentsholing, located adjacent to Jaigaon in West Bengal, serves as the main entry point for travelers from India.
Paro International Airport is Bhutan’s only international airport, situated in the scenic Paro Valley. It offers both domestic and international flights, with regular connections to major Indian cities such as Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, and Bagdogra. Flying into Paro is one of the quickest and most convenient ways to enter Bhutan.
While Bhutan doesn’t have its own railway network, you can still travel by train up to Hasimara, the nearest major railway station to the border. Located just 18 km from Phuentsholing, Hasimara is well-connected with cities like Kolkata, Siliguri, and Guwahati. From there, taxis and rental vehicles are easily available to reach the Bhutanese border town.
Traveling to Bhutan by road is an adventure in itself. Though it may take more time, the journey offers scenic landscapes and cultural glimpses that are well worth it. The most common road route is through Asian Highway 48 (AH48) or National Highway 317A, connecting Jaigaon (India) to Phuentsholing (Bhutan). Private cars, buses, and rental taxis are all available for this route.
